Student Well-being
Morning Relaxation sets the tone for the day for students at the secondary level. Approximately 20-30 minutes long, students are taken through exercises that focus on presence, patience, non-judging, acceptance and letting go. Exercises include deep relaxation and breathing practices. Students report feeling a sense of calm immediately as well as experiencing calmness throughout the day.
Pre-Exam Anxiety Management allows secondary students to create a positive mind-set prior to beginning their exams. The focus is on less worry and more relaxation. By creating a positive mind-set through the use of visualization and writing, students reflect on success and set an intention for their success. Students are taught to use their breath and a repetitive, positive statement or mantra to focus on rather than allowing their mind to ruminate or imagine the worst case scenario.
Mindfulness for Adolescents can be a stand alone session or a series of six or more sessions for secondary students. Often available as an after school activity or during advisory sessions or homeroom, students are taken through 30-40 minutes of deep relaxation, sensory awareness exercises using eye movements, sounds and other senses, breathing techniques and guided, breath-awareness concentration/meditation. By using the breath as a point of focused awareness, students learn to redirect their thoughts to the present. Studies show that focused-awareness concentration or meditation activates the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, allowing for memory and cognition to flow.
Yoga and Mindfulness for Teens is an opportunity for peers to connect and support one another. Themes include dealing with emotions, self-awareness, social awareness and coping with stress. A typical class consists of asana (yoga poses) designed to challenge and strengthen as well as learning relaxation techniques, including breathing and meditation skills. The breathing techniques are meant to build concentration and clarity—benefits that will help every aspect of a teen's academic, personal and social life.
Yoga and Mindfulness for Teens with Special Needs is specifically designed for a differently-abled population. Working individually or in small groups, an accessible class consists of gentle asana designed to build muscle tone and balance and breathing practices to strengthen vagal tone.
Positive Psychology for Adolescents draws on various curriculum from U.S. and U.K. experts in well-being lessons for adolescents. Grounded in a growth mindset framework, the course is designed to help students reach their full potential through the exploration of the self.
